Usually, you have until April 15, 2020 to file your PA personal income tax. To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Governor Tom Wolf has ordered all non-life-sustaining businesses to close Monday at 8 AM. This closure includes tax preparers. Under Pennsylvania law the filing deadline for personal income tax returns is tied to the federal income tax due date. The Internal Revenue Service extended due date of July 15, 2020 to file your 1040 this week. What this means to you is you have an
additional 90 days to file your 2019 PA-40 (Pennsylvania personal income tax return).
Like the IRS, the PA Department of Revenue has extended the payment due date to July 15, 2020 without interest and penalty. This extension applies to return payments, and estimated payments for the first and second quarters of 2020.
“This is a necessary step that will give Pennsylvania taxpayers extra time to file their returns and make tax payments during a difficult time for everyone,” Revenue Secretary Dan Hassell said. “Particularly for those who plan to meet with a tax professional to prepare their returns, the new deadline will help everyone follow the Governor’s guidance to stay at home as we all work to prevent the spread of the virus.”
The PA Department of Revenue is encouraging taxpayers e-file their returns. This allows PA to process returns as commonwealth offices are closed. If you are expecting a refund, do not delay to file your return to get it back while we are all stuck at home. It will give you something to do.:)
